Dozens of firefighters worked to put out a fire at Afghan Bazaar in Hicksville. Nassau County’s chief fire marshal told News 12 the cause was accidental and that the fire was due to improper use of an extension cord.
News 12 spoke with the family of the owner, who was in Turkey buying items for the shop.
Diana Nodrat, the owner’s niece, said “it’s just devastating” and that all her uncle’s hard work is now in ashes.
Jia Khan said she drove from Connecticut to get clothes for her niece’s wedding at the store.
She said she was inside when the fire started.
Khan said she pulled out her nieces and sister and “ran across the street.”
Joe DiFronzo, chief of Department for the Hicksville Fire Department, said that there was “heavy smoke."
He said it could’ve been a lot worse had it spread to other buildings.
