The Hempstead School District and a local church made sure families in need can stay warm this winter.
The First Baptist Church of Hempstead joined the school district in hosting a winter clothing giveaway on Saturday to help those in need bundle up this winter.
Hundreds of families attended the event and took home coats and other winter clothing, as well as baby supplies and food.
"We've been speaking with residents to find out what they need," the Rev. David Vilceus said. "People are hurting financially and there are concerns about the future. We have a diverse congregation and they want to extend help to all the communities in the district."
To further its cause, the church plans to launch a food pantry in 2026.
