A grassy area at the Central Mall at Jones Beach State Park is under construction to become a helipad for emergency transports by air.

It's been a decade since the Central Mall at Jones Beach had a helipad.

The new one under construction is expected to be ready in time for Fourth of July weekend.

"We feel it could be used up to a dozen times a year... one time would be all that was needed to save someone's life," said George Gorman, NY State Parks regional director for Long Island.

Jones Beach State Park does have several other landing spots for helicopters at various locations.
