New Jersey is bracing for more significant rainfall that increases the flood potential around the state.
All 21 counties in New Jersey are under a flood watch. A few meteorological factors are at play here. A front moving in from the West and another slow-moving system sliding up the East Coast.
The forecast has the two systems converging over the region and focusing intense rain bands in areas that could lead to 2 inches of rain an hour. That's the type of rain that will allow water to quickly collect in streets but also allow small streams to overflow. Some neighborhoods along these small streams have already flooded this summer. It is entirely possible that flooding could occur again.
Please be extra mindful of the weather conditions tomorrow. In anticipation of the inbound rainfall, if your property is prone to flooding, I would suggest getting valuables to a safe, dry location even before the first raindrop falls.
Rain and storms will linger into Thursday night and early Friday morning. As this weather system slowly moves away, much cooler air filters in behind it.
Finally, a break in the intense heat this summer has been provided. Since June 1, the average temperature has been well above the norm. We still have 33 days left of climatological summer to go, and we are currently looking at the third-warmest summer since records have been kept. We haven't gotten to August yet! So, this upcoming break in the heat is warranted and well deserved.
Right now, the weekend looks wonderful. Nothing but sunshine both Saturday and Sunday with temperatures in the low 80s and, most importantly, the humidity drops to dry levels. Enjoy the intermission.
