Halloween brings visitors to Sleepy Hollow’s attractions, shops and restaurants. But for people who live there, the crowds also bring concerns about parking and safety.
With visitors arriving for Friday night’s attractions and Halloween on Saturday, some residents say illegally parked cars are blocking drivers’ views near stop signs. They’re asking visitors to follow parking signs, keep driveways clear and respect private property.
A little planning can help. Check event times before leaving and allow extra time to get around.
Sleepy Hollow police are also sharing reminders to help families celebrate safely:
- Slow down behind the wheel. Watch for trick-or-treaters.
- Use sidewalks and crosswalks. Stay in well-lit areas.
- Help children be seen. Bring flashlights or glow sticks or add reflective tape to costumes.
- Keep their view clear. Choose face paint instead of masks.
- Stay together. Young children should trick-or-treat with an adult. Older children should follow a planned route, stay with their group and check in with parents.
Police also advise families to visit only homes with porch lights on and remind children never to enter someone’s home or car.
For adults whose celebrations include alcohol, the reminder is simple: Plan a safe ride home before heading out.
