A road in Stony Brook left broken in pieces by a powerful rainstorm in August 2024 is now one step closer to being restored.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced the state will provide $6.5 million toward repairs on Harbor Road—more than doubling the original $2.7 million allocation.

“Harbor Road and the historic Mill Dam are part of the character and charm that make Stony Brook such a special community, and we are pleased to step up with funding to help move this recovery project forward,” Hochul said in a statement.

Additional funding is also coming from the federal government. On Wednesday, the Brookhaven Town Highway Department received $5 million secured by Rep. Nick LaLota, with $2.5 million designated for Harbor Road repairs.

The total cost of the project is estimated to fall between $6 million and $8 million, with combined state and federal funding expected to cover the full scope of the work.

Construction is anticipated to be completed next year.
