Southampton Village police announced on Facebook that the Hamptons Marathon this weekend will be canceled because of the nor’easter.

The announcement comes days after uncertainty about whether the storm would impact the marathon.

The Facebook post says predicted high winds and heavy rains could impact the course.

The course for the marathon, which is a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon, included a stretch along Meadow Lane near the water.

News 12 reached out to marathon organizers multiple times on Thursday.

For the last few days, organizers said on Facebook they were in talks with local officials to see if it was going to be safe to have the event.

The police say the weather could make the course unsafe.

News 12 spoke with runners and businesses who are hoping the event would still go on.

“I’ve run in the rain for races before, but just the wind and the flooding and how much rain there’s going to be as really concerning,” says Sayre Hildreth, a Southampton resident who was supposed to run.

“We would be disappointed because we do need that revenue,” says Jose Santiago, who works at the restaurant Crispy Taco.

In a Facebook post from Wednesday, organizers said if the race is canceled, registered runners will get their full registration fee as race credit.
