Nassau County police say they arrested a juvenile after a gun was recovered at a Nassau County high school.
Police responded around noon on Tuesday to reports of a weapon seen at Shubert School, located at 835 Dermott Ave. in Baldwin.
Families tell News 12 they did not receive notice from the school district until Wednesday afternoon, over 24 hours after it happened.
“I think it is crazy they did not notify anyone," said Tyrek Rawls. "That’s dangerous for kids and parents not to know about a gun inside the school.”
“They don’t want to alarm parents. They want to get the full scope of what’s going on, because parents will be alarmed. But I’m not sure what the protocol is," said Andre McKenzie.
Officials say there was no threat to the Baldwin School District or community.
Police did not say if the gun was loaded at the time it was found or the identity of the person in custody.
“They are always on top of everything. Nassau County and surrounding towns are always on top of everything. So this is really surprising," Rawls said.
Baldwin schools released the following statement:
“The Baldwin Union Free School District remains fully committed to maintaining a safe, secure, and supportive learning environment for every student in our care. Yesterday, Baldwin Union Free School District responded to an incident at Shubert School. Upon learning of the situation, we immediately activated our safety protocols and contacted local law enforcement, who responded swiftly and professionally. The situation has been fully resolved, and all necessary actions have been taken in accordance with the district’s code of conduct.”
