Gov. Mikie Sherrill provided an update Saturday on the impacts of recent severe storms and extreme heat conditions in New Jersey, including significant damage across North Jersey and the Jersey Shore.

Sherrill said Friday’s storms brought wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph, which downed trees and power lines and left widespread outages across multiple communities.

“While we have restored 135,000 people to power more than 165,000 homes and businesses remain without,” Sherrill said, underscoring ongoing restoration efforts.

Sherrill also addressed infrastructure impacts, noting damage to NJ Transit’s Morris and Essex lines as a result of the storm. She said most rail service is expected to be restored by Monday morning’s commute, although the Morris and Essex lines remain exceptions, bus service will be available for commuters if the lines are still impacted.

State officials say crews are continuing emergency repairs and power restoration work as New Jersey recovers from the storm system.
