New Jersey is honoring fallen U.S. Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, with Gov. Mikie Sherrill declaring Thursday as Brian Sicknick Day.
Sicknick, a South River native, died after defending the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack.
Officials said Sicknick was pepper-sprayed by rioters during the attack. He died of a stroke the following day, and the medical examiner ruled that the events surrounding the attack played a role in his death.
In a statement, Sherrill said, "More than five years later, we have a responsibility to remember the truth of what happened and ensure that Brian's service and sacrifice are never forgotten."
