Welcome back to ask Governor Murphy here on News 12 New Jersey. Uh We're picking up our conversation about MJ transit uh Governor. Of course, there was the fair holiday uh that you had announced that took place at the end of the summer. And you know, that was one of those things where, yeah, listen, commuters were grateful for it to a point. It was a gesture, but they still want to see what's wrong, be fixed. They still want to see the infrastructure improved. Uh And that being said, let's get to John on the line in Elizabeth John. Hey John, how you doing? Governor? I'm good man. How are you uh hurting? But that's like I said, that's the nature of the beast when you're disabled. So um I don't want to take up too much of your time because I know there's a lot of calls. So I'm trying to make this brief as possible. My question is sort of a two parter. Uh First question is, when are you gonna hold Amtrak accountable for the Star State of a rail line? And personally speaking, I think it's a disgrace. I mean, we just spent $80 million here in Elizabeth to fix our train station. And yet we're seeing delays in pack stations on a daily basis. And secondly, um as a disabled person who relies on transit, what is being done to make it more accessible for disabled people myself because it's getting to the point where I can't even use it because I can't be on my feet for too long. And with all these delays, I'm having to stand on my feet for hours on end. So listen, John, uh that, that let me start with the back part of that. That's unacceptable. Um And again, I'm gonna ask Kevin Corbett, who is the chief executive officer of NJ transit, who by the way, goes in and works his tail off every day. So this is, I don't want people to think that this is all on one guy. Uh by the way, us naval Academy graduate uh a proud veteran, but I'm gonna ask him to follow up with you uh on that uh the question about accessibility. Um I, I wanna go back also to what, how Eric started this. It was a gesture, that's what exactly what it was. It was a tip of the cap to say, you know what? We had a lousy summer and we're gonna give you a week of a week of commuting on us. That's all that was um the fundamental issues. Remember when we got here, there weren't enough engineers, the equipment was old. We were gonna miss a federal safety, uh, uh, deadline that would have put the system out of business. Um, bad equipment. Uh, on time performance was awful. All of that is better. All of that is better and in some cases meaningfully better, unfortunately, it doesn't mean that every day it is better. Or in the month of June that the month of June was a, was a month that we felt really good about. It was the second worst summer we've had. But interestingly enough, the worst one was because of what we inherited that was many years ago. This one was overwhelmingly because of Amtrak and other uh issues in the first part of John's question. And again, uh Kevin Corbett will call and, and weigh in on this, we are holding Amtrak accountable. We have a good relationship with him. I don't want to treat this like it's us versus them. Uh They've been desperate to get more funding to upgrade their infrastructure and their equipment. Uh We're trying to help them with that uh with the Feds. Um So, and we've got a, a good partnership but that's not to say that it is more likely than not if you look at this summer. The um one of the Nikita did a really good piece. 60 odd percent of the reasons the, the, the core reasons were Amtrak uh uh born and so we're doing everything we can John to push back on all the above. And again, I'll ask Kevin to give you a call. Governor II, I wanna shift gears to talk about way down south Jersey. Let's talk about it. We're leaving NJ transit for now. Um, Atlantic City casinos, uh, as you know, uh, casino workers have been fighting, uh, especially the group cease to put an end to the smoking exemption in Atlantic City's gaming halls. New Jersey Supreme Court blocked their injunction request. It would have suspended indoor smoking inside casinos case remains in the appellate division. Now, can you comment on where? II, I know that you're named in the suit? So there's only so much you can't say. But can you comment on where the case stands and how do you see this being resolved? Will it be resolved legislatively? Well, let me put it this way. I'll, I'll repeat this is the part I just don't get this. This is the union that represents the dealers and I have an enormous amount of sympathy with them and they're somehow blaming this on me. And I just wanna repeat what I've been saying now, I think for five years, if a bill comes to my desk, I hope you're listening out there that ban smoking in casinos in Atlantic City, I will sign it, period. This is I'm not equivocating. I have not equivocated about that. Our lawyers have felt from day one that this would not get resolved in the courts. In fact, I I was led to believe that this is, this is dead. Uh But either way, whether it is or it isn't our lawyers from moment one said this is, this will not have success in the, in the court of law. Uh The way to solve this is through legislation and, and I, I don't know, as we sit here today where, what the likelihood is, but I wanna be unequivocal and say I will sign it if it gets to me. All right, governor. Uh let's get back to the funds. Where with Dan on the line, Dan, what's your question? Hey Dan. Yeah, how are you doing? Uh Mr Murphy, my name is Dan Vicente. I'm the director of UAW region nine. We're the ones that filed the suit. Yes, sir. How are you? I'm all right, brother. Um So my question, sir is, and I appreciate the sympathy. I do. Uh But sympathy doesn't keep our people alive, Mr Governor. Um, this is an issue that is black and white smoking is not good. Like we can give you data and facts and all these types of figures. But at the end of the day for regular working people like us, you're not allowed to smoke anywhere else except this final place and you have the power for executive action to close that loophole or you could have chosen to not use taxpayer money to fight us in the courts when all we're trying to do is fight to keep our people safe and alive. So Mr Governor, like, I appreciate you, say that if the bill gets to your desk, you'll sign it. But your party is in charge of New Jersey. If the Democrats wanted this to pass and if you jumped on board it would pass. So, like, how are we supposed to accept from the state from your office that our people's lives aren't as valuable as everyone else. Hey, Dan, first of all, God bless you and I appreciate your, your passion and I don't blame you. Uh And I'm gonna ask, I think I'm gonna ask Param to follow up uh Natalie Natalie Hamilton is with me. So a couple of things uh again, and, and this is not in the spirit of arguing. Executive order actually does not get this done, Dan. Uh So whoever's telling you that is not giving you good advice, uh that would be shut down within 24 hours. Uh Secondly, uh we are obligated to defend laws that are on the books, whether we agree with them or not. That's the obligation uh of the state government and that's what we did here. So this is not wasting taxpayer dollars. This is doing what we are required to do. And thirdly, I would beg you Dan, you and your colleagues to get to the legislators, either the ones who you think are champions of this and can be with you. I know Senator Vitale would be at the head of that list or go to the folks that you think are right now against it or on the fence and put your energies into convincing them to join, join the, the, um, the, the, the march toward getting legislation on my desk. I, I can't sign legislation that's not on my desk. Executive order will not do it. We predicted from the beginning the courts would not take this, um, but get the bill to my desk and I'll sign it. Welcome back to ask Governor Murphy. I'm Eric Lanz Coroner. Let's get back to the phones right now. We have Debbie from Forked River on the line. Uh, Debbie, what's your question? Hey, Debbie. Um, yes, Mr Governor, I have a question. Um, I heard this on one of the, the governor talk shows probably last fall. The anchor program, which is real, which was the homestead rebate and the senior free a statement was made that down the line, the anchor program is going to do away with the senior free. That's my question because the senior freeze is very important to the elderly of this state and the calculations won't add up. Um, Debbie, first of all, good to hear from you. I'm gonna ask Dennis Zello, who's our head of policy to follow up with you? Uh, don't be, uh, panicked about this. Um, these programs, there are multiple programs that exist right now, either that are alive and in place in, in running in parallel paths or in some cases like Stay and J, uh, which is proposed to come on board. Uh, I guess next year at this point, um, I will just tell you this unequivocally, no matter what the program, seniors are getting the best treatment by far. Uh, and, and I promise you that will continue to be the case. Uh Anchor gives seniors a, a juice, uh, whether you own a home or you rent. Senior freeze has been a lifeline for a long time stay and Jay is, is overwhelmingly focused solely on seniors. So no matter what it's called, uh, or when it comes into place, I promise you uh seniors will be the ones who we take care of. First and foremost, you've deserved it, you earn it. Uh And that's the way it should be. But I'm gonna ask our head of policy, Dennis Selo to come back, Debbie and give you a shout, Governor, you might have heard there's an election coming. Uh Yeah. Uh So there was a poll worker recruitment effort over at Metlife Stadium this week. Uh 1st, 1st time we've done that. Yeah. Can you talk about how, how it went? Uh How difficult is it as well to, to get polling workers these days? First of all, it was at metlife uh done with some of the great New York football giants led by our great lieutenant governor and Secretary of State Tahisha Way. And she is overseeing all elections from moment one uh in our administration. And that includes some really tough darn elections, especially during COVID. Uh I think she would say it got, it, got off to a good start. I think this is something where you're gonna see decent. Um But I think it's a classic case of you'll see this build over time. Uh The need right now is for folks literally on game day on November 5th. I think folks think that we're well covered for the early in person voting. And by the way, don't forget that's October 26th. That's, uh that starts in early in person that runs through Sunday, November 3rd. And you can go anywhere in your county, unlike on game day on November 5th where I, I go to that same elementary school that I've been going to for 20 odd years. Uh an early in person you could go to anywhere uh in your county and I think she feels she being uh Tahisha and the great county clerks around our 21 counties that they're covered on early in person, but they need the help on November 5th. It's a presidential election turnout therefore will be the highest of the four year cycle. There are some competitive down ballot races. You got a senate race, you've got some competitive house races. So that's the day that we, we need. Folks also bears pointing out the vote by mail is already happening. Uh 21,486 ballots have already been returned. Yeah, and uh 933,000 have already been sent out and that's become uh you, you talk about muscle memory in life, uh voting by mail, if you look at what that was, you know, five years ago was probably 400 less than half of what it is today in terms of the amount of ballots that are out there, that's just become something that folks are getting much more used to. And it makes sense. And by the way, early in person also makes sense. What if you've got your train breaks down to the earlier questions or you've got to work a second job on election day or the weather is lousy. Welcome back to ask Governor Murphy here on News 12 New Jersey. I'm Eric Lanker along with Governor Phil Murphy. That's 8886397126. Governor's story that uh has been making and grabbing some headlines, making some noise here. It has to do with care point health uh warning that they could be laying off 2600 employees. Uh We actually have a breakdown of where those actual layoffs could happen per uh per actual facility. So Bay on Medical Center, Christ Hospital, Hoboken uh University Medical Center there. Uh What is the state's role in, in ensuring continuity here? I I understand that the state Health Department is keeping a very close watch very much. So, I mean, the most important thing is you cannot afford a health care desert, particularly in the most densely populated county in the United States. So Hudson County is not just densely populated by Jersey standards, it's by American standards. So the most important job for us is to make sure that this does not become, as I say, a health care desert. And then when you add to that the potential loss of livelihood and jobs, this is something that we're working on morning, noon and night. We're trying to convene various players who we think at the end of the day can play a role, uh or a combination of roles uh to keep the health care services being delivered to the folks who need it the most. This isn't unique in America right now, you've got a lot of health care system upheaval. Uh some systems run better than others, some have challenges even beyond whether they're well run or not. And, and in this case, they're hemorrhaging money, they're hemorrhaging money to the tune of several million a week. So, uh this is something that we're, that we're not just paying close attention to. We're spending a lot of time on and hopefully we can get a resolution that achieves what we want to achieve here, which continues to deliver health care to the folks who need it most and continues to provide livelihoods for the many thousands of folks who are associated with these hospitals. Governor. Uh, this week, Attorney Matt Platkin called for immediate reforms uh of the New Jersey State Police and this is a story that we covered as soon as it came out. Uh after two reports were released detailing alleged misconduct and mishandling of internal affairs investigations as well as discrimination in hiring. Have you spoken with Colonel Callahan about the findings as well as the A GS order for reforms? Yeah, I speak to Colonel Callahan uh virtually every day. Um Listen, we've got among if not the finest men and women in law enforcement in the entire country and our state police period. Uh And having said that these reports are sobering to say the least and clearly reforms are needed and they're needed. Now, uh I am completely confident that the Attorney General Platkin Colonel Callahan and their respective teams will do just that. Uh and we owe our brave men and women in law enforcement and uniform. Nothing less to than to make sure that they are all treated fairly uh with the respect and, and uh and equity that they deserve. Uh Governor, we have another call right now. Actually, this is uh Sean from Jackson on the line. He has a question about freehold raceway. Hey, Sean, how you doing, Governor? I'm good, sir. How are you? Good. I have a question for you. I, I don't know if you're aware of that. Uh Free Hole Raceway is closing in December 28th. I am and I was wondering if what you would tell me to, you know, what I could do to try to save the track from closing or if you know anything that I could do to, you know, help this situation out. That's a good question uh to ask. Uh And Sean, I'm gonna ask our colleague, Eric Brophy to give you a shout. Natalie. If you can make note of that, I would appreciate it. Yeah, this is closing. Uh It's closing in fact, in two days. Um And this is an iconic uh track that's been around a long time. So it's not a happy uh result. This is also not unique to New Jersey or to freehold raceway. You see the consolidation and, and skinny down of the race business all around the country. Uh I'm proud that I signed uh a another significant purse subsidy. So f for the tracks that remain open uh that they'll be able to be competitive with the region. Uh Sean too early for me to tell would love any good ideas you have. So I'd love you to bat this around with Eric Brophy. Um It's privately owned. Uh We're already thinking through and brainstorming potential uses. I'm not sure that picture was up for everybody to see, but it's a significant chunk of land. Um It seems ideal for some sort of positive development. Um And again, would love your good ideas in, in Jackson, you're right down the street. So you're you probably are intimately aware, aware of this and, and familiar with the details. It would be great if there's a happy ending here. I would love that to be the case. Somebody mentioned, uh, to my wife recently that they thought there was a, maybe a last minute, uh, Hail Mary here. I hope that's true. Uh, but whatever it is would love to get your good ideas. Yeah. Hi. Historic Track too. Dates back to the 18 hundreds. It's the oldest in America. I, I remember when they, when they renovated it years ago, the old Grand sta, uh, and it's, uh, it's, it's, it's, it states that it's gonna, it's gonna fold up, but again, it's not, it's not unique to that track or to the state, uh, in this line of business these days. Uh, governor, we have a, we have a question as, you know, uh, every show we like to send a camera around and get questions from the viewers on the street. Here's one this is about, uh, auto insurance. Oh, here we go. Uh, Debbie posted, uh, this, I apologize. I thought this was something that was recorded. It is not. Uh, Debbie wants to know why are car insurance and home insurance rates skyrocketing? Uh, NJ, car insurance is out of hand. She said I get increases twice a year. So obviously this was a question on social media, on X government. This is Debbie. Is that Debbie? Um, I hope you're listening to, I'm gonna ask again, Dennis Zello Natalie to follow up with, with Debbie. Um Yeah, listen, the, the I'm not saying this, uh, as an excuse or with any amount of joy, uh, in, in America right now. This is the reality and all I could say is some places it, as bad as it is right now for us, go to Florida right now and it is eye popping. Uh, this is not unique to New Jersey. Uh, and I will tell you whether it's homeowners, whether it's car insurance, whether it's health insurance. Um, we just put a report out in fact, earlier this week about, uh, health care and health insurance and how expensive it has become, uh, and some suggestions as to what we can do to get ahead of that. Um, but it, it's a trend right now that it's national. Um, I would dare say it's global but I know it's national. Uh, but Debbie, I'd love to get any, uh, thoughts you have. I'll ask Dennis to follow up with you. We do everything we can in the department of, uh, of, of banking and insurance. Uh, we run as tight a ship, I think as any state's operation, similar operation. But we, you know, there's only so much we could do and I promise you we'll keep doing it. Governor. Uh, you recently conditionally vetoed a mortgage relief bill, uh, that would have offered some breathing room for the I I of victims, I of flood victims. Um And, and that would have come in the form of forbearance for them. I believe it was for about a year. Some critics have referred to this as more bureaucratic red tape than you want. So, can you talk about why you conditionally vetoed this and, and what it is that you want the legislature to change? Um I'm glad you asked this. Uh, n number one, I want folks to know when I got, when I was campaigning before I was governor, when I first got into office. Um I heard from Sandy Victim Families, mostly on the shore, but all around the state. And I committed that if we ever had more natural disasters that we wouldn't leave this office in my case in 16 months with a si similar set of aggrieved families. So I didn't happily uh veto this, but I, I did it for a couple of reasons. So we're committed to helping folks. I wanna say that most importantly, number one, there's a program that already exists and this bill needed to be conformed with the program that already exist existed. And if it didn't conform, there would have been legal issues for families, for all parties. And we, that, that, that's a bad result that would slow down folks getting their rightful uh compensation. Secondly, there was a protection element. Uh Folks in the bill that we got could just walk in and say Hey, uh, I'm a ID, a victim and I need help as opposed to verifying that. And that's something we wanna make sure that the right people get helped, not just folks who happen to walk in. So I would hope, uh, the legislators out there and some of them have been pretty vocal about this. I would ask them, uh, to quickly, uh, uh, concur on this, uh, this, this, uh, veto, uh, and, and, and frankly that's something they could do in a matter of days and I hope they do. There's some talk that they may have a separate bill. Uh, I'm not sure that's a good idea because that's gonna lengthen this process. Our objective was to get to the quick and get this, get this process as smoothly up and running as possible. So that's the rationale. All right, governor, we're gonna take another quick break. Let's get back to the phones right now here and ask Governor Murphy, we have Jeff from Ring uh, Ringwood on the line. Jeff, what's your question? Hey, Jeff, how are you doing? Uh, uh, Governor? Thank you first for taking the call and taking your time to do this. Very nice. Um Basically, II, I gotta say, first and foremost, thank you for taking care of New Jersey the way you have, uh, since your term, I mean, no matter what's going on, you really are taking care of us and I, I do appreciate it. It's a very rare commodity these days. Um, but my question is this, uh, governor since 2011, I retired a retired police officer and we were there for the state of New Jersey to several administrations when, you know, New Jersey needed a hand. Well, when Governor Christie came in and same deal, he took away our cola cost of living adjustment. Now, I know you're very well aware of what's going on, you know, throughout the country. But in New Jersey as well with the economy, I'm up 42% with everything. I haven't had a raise since 2011. I'm about to lose pretty much what I worked for. Um, but, but, but I took this job and everybody took this job. This was a guarantee to us and then, you know, we worked so hard for it and they just took it away. What do you, what are your thoughts on it, Governor? That, that's really all I want to hear. Jeff. Thank you and thanks for your very kind words. Uh, my way, this has been AAA challenging one. It was ripped away from folks as you rightfully point out about a dozen years ago. There was a lot of discussion about how ho how big the savings would be for the state. Uh, and too little discussion about how it was gonna impact guys like you, uh, in the real here and now, uh, and we've been working with, I'm gonna ask again, Natalie Dennis Eoff to follow up because Dennis has been the closest to this. We've been working with a group of, uh, really responsible smart retiree advocates trying to find some creative way, uh, to do something with Cola, we clearly prioritize making the full pension payment because we were so concerned that our pension system, uh, was on the edge financially. Uh, and I'm proud of what we've done. We've made now many years in a row of a full payment after an embarrassing 25 years on both sides of the aisle of not making that full payment so that clearly has been our priority, but we are absolutely open minded to try to find creative ways. The problem is it's expensive. Uh Again, no individuals running to the bank. Jeff, this is a difference as you say, between staying above water or not. But when you add it all up, it's expensive. I was interested to see Steve Sweeney uh propose at least a general proposal of somehow using um monetizing or maximizing state assets uh to address reinstating cola. Um And so we'll see what that looks like. Um And uh but I, I promise you, our team uh has been focused on this. I can't promise you we're gonna get there. Uh But we get it particularly in a period as we've seen over the past couple of years of really high inflation, inflation is coming down. Thank God, it's getting better, but it's still with us and that makes the lack of cola even more painful. So, stay tuned, Jeff and thank you for weighing in governor uh as you know, it's been almost a year since October 7th. Now, it's hard to believe, extraordinary uh hamas' murderous rampage uh almost a year in captivity for now, 100 or so remaining hostages including New Jersey's Idan Alexander. Will New Jersey be marking the date with anything in particular and uh will there be heightened security? Uh As once again, this date is going to fall around the Jewish holidays. So, on the latter we, we don't get in uh uh as you and I have discussed in the past, we don't get into details on that, but we are taking this very, very seriously all houses of worship a across the spectrum of houses of worship in particular. Obviously, our universities have been a hotbed over the past year of this school year. Knock on wood less so than last um any other uh religious schools, et cetera. These are all situations that we take very seriously. We had a call. In fact, now, at this point, a couple of weeks ago, among our senior security folks, including chaired by myself, uh to talk about that very topic, we will clearly mark the day uh to be determined on exactly what that will look like. But myself, the lieutenant governor, the first lady at a minimum will all be out fanning around the state uh to acknowledge a very, very tragic, uh, brutally tragic anniversary. And again, Adon Alexander, as you rightfully point out from Bergen County, uh I believe still 20 years old, um Alexander family have, uh, we've gotten to know exceedingly well over the past year. Um, we pray for him and we pray for the release of all those hostages and a responsible cessation, uh what whatever that looks like to these hostilities and we pray for all the innocent victims. Uh Governor at the top of the show, we spoke a little bit about obviously the indictment that New York City's mayor is facing, uh, and I mentioned that we're gonna talk about this as well. Uh Atlantic City's mayor, uh Marty Small and his wife, who is the city's, uh, uh, school superintendent were both indicted on child endangerment. Uh, and other charges for allegedly beating their daughter. Smalls have said that they're innocent and they've called the situation a private family issue. Should Mayor Small and his wife resign. Well, first of all, again, as is the case with Eric Adams or with anybody else in this country, one of the great hallmarks of our nation is you're innocent until proven guilty. You deserve your day in court. Um, and, uh, Marty and his wife are no exception to that. But I put out a statement, I think immediately after this, uh, this came to light and said, II, I think he really owes it to the people of Atlantic City to think through whether or not he can still hold the position. And I will reiterate that today. Um That, that, that's a, uh, that, that, that's a question which is pregnant, uh, and, and de deservedly, uh, or meaningfully so rightfully so, um, but the allegations are very, very disturbing. Again, innocent till proven guilty. But I think Marty has to really think through whether or not he can continue to perform his function as mayor. Our governor. No, we are still in the fight. Um I think it's still Philadelphia's to lose, but we have a incredibly at the table. Absolutely. OK. Uh Let's talk about NJ PACK. You were just at a groundbreaking huge. It just goes to show you the arts are such a central element of our society, right in downtown Newark with the mayor, uh with the Corporates incredibly impressed to expand the whole, the whole thing. Uh 300 something million dollars, the state's playing a big role. It's gonna be a game changer. Adam Sandler has been making the rounds around the state for the Happy Gilmore sequel. Uh Pretty cool. Huh? Our film and television business is booming. Adam's a good, a good example of that. We were in Toronto at the film Festival. I think we have 12 film productions going on right now in New Jersey. More than anywhere else in the world. How to make you feel at the end of the sea here now festival to see that crowd for Springsteen. Unbelievable. We were there on Sunday night, 35,000. One of our kids was a quarter of a mile back and Tammy sent a screenshot to our kids. And he said, boy, I wish I had the same view that you guys had really special. The boss turned 75 last week and God bless him, something else that was special for you and the first lady because you're founders of uh Gotham FC Partners uh historic Week for you uh for the team this week, gather at the White in the White House with President Biden. We won the title last November. Um This is the second time in an incarnation of our team made it to the White House, but this is the first time in a long time and it was really, really special with a lot of young people who participated. Uh It's a great sport. Don't forget folks. We have the World Cup final in New Jersey, July 19th, 2026. All right. So we're almost out of time. Governor. I'll give you a chance for some final thoughts today. Great to be with you. I missed you. We're back to school. There's a lot going on. This is a complicated, challenging world, but it's filled with opportunity. And I think New Jersey for all of the challenges and you heard a lot of them tonight. Folks and they're real.
