Gov. Mikie Sherrill signed three executive orders to protect New Jersey residents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
During a press conference alongside Acting Attorney General Jennifer Davenport and Acting Human Services Commissioner Dr. Stephen Cha, Sherrill announced Executive Order No. 12 , which protects against ICE raids on state property, a resident reporting portal, and information explaining a resident’s rights.
“Today, we are making clear that the Trump administration’s lawless actions will not go unchecked in New Jersey. Given ICE’s willingness to flout the Constitution and violently endanger communities – detaining children, arresting citizens, and even killing several innocent civilians – I will stand up for New Jerseyans right to be safe,” said Sherrill.
This action correlates to the increase of incidents connected to ICE agents, including the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis. As well as a recent incident in New Jersey involving ICE ERO (Enforcement and Removal Operations) that involved the discharge of a firearm in Roxbury Township.
Sherrill calls this action a way to protect New Jerseyans’ safety and Constitutional rights.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security issued a statement to News 12 following Sherrill’s announcement.
“This is legally illiterate. Enforcing federal immigration laws is a clear federal responsibility under Article I, Article II and the Supremacy Clause. While New Jersey sanctuary politicians continue to release pedophiles, rapists, gang members, and murderers onto their streets, our brave law enforcement will continue to risk their lives to arrest these heinous criminals and make New Jersey safe again,” the statement read in part.
