Gas prices are steadily decreasing these days – the average cost for a gallon of gas in New Jersey is $3.10, according to AAA. That's down from last month's $3.29.
A year ago, motorists were paying $3.75.
At the Wawa on Route 46 in Mountain Lakes, a gallon of regular gas is $2.95
"It's less expensive, people can take a sigh of relief that they are not spending a whole giant amount of money just to fill up their car," said Vanessa Jimenez, of Budd Lake.
National gas prices have not been below $3 in 3 1/2 years. When gas prices are like this, experts say it's bad for the big oil companies but can be good for your local gas station.
"They're doing well, even the off-price folks – the BJs, the Costcos, the Wawas," says Tom Kloza, of Oil Price Information Service. "They're doing terrific. This is a big inning for them, and it promises to be that going into 2025 as well."
Gas prices tend to drop this time of the year.
Bill Dowd of Hackettstown called it a "big relief” and hopes the prices “keep dropping."
Experts believe gas nationwide could get below $3 a gallon.
