The Town of Brookhaven is looking to solidify its plans to gradually shut down the Holtsville Ecology Site when it holds a public hearing later today on its preliminary capital budget.
Part of the proposed spending plan includes transitioning away from the controversial animal sanctuary by transferring the animals, many of which are too sick or injured to survive in the wild, to an approved and accredited sanctuary, ensuring continued care and ethical treatment.
The plan would continue to fund the facility through the first quarter of 2026, allowing sufficient time to relocate all the animals properly.
The town first announced plans to close the facility in September, citing cost-cutting measures, but conditions inside have long been under scrutiny.
Last December, the town requested that the Suffolk County District Attorney's office investigate allegations of animal mistreatment and improper veterinary care.
Some community members have cheered on the plan to close the site over concerns about the conditions for the animals inside.
Others, including a group of residents who have started a petition with over 5,000 signatures, want to see the town save and invest in the facility.
Today's town board public hearing on the preliminary budget is being held at Brookhaven Town Hall in Farmingville at 5 p.m.
