After years of uncertainty and vandalism — the old Dowling College campus in Oakdale is once again being put up for sale.
“We used to drive we used to drive into this neighborhood and this building welcomed you,” said Al Kulfan, of Oakdale. “For the past ten years, it's been degrading.”
The property includes the famous Vanderbilt Idle Hour mansion which was historically preserved on the outside and turned into classrooms and offices on the inside.
Dowling College shut down in 2016.
As News 12 has covered extensively in the years since, there have been ongoing issues with vandalism, burglary, and trespassing. The Oakdale community formed a neighborhood watch group to help key an eye on things.
Now residents say they are cautiously optimistic.
“I would like… someone to purchase this and keep the community in mind,” said David Chan, of Oakdale. “Something that would fit the neighborhood.”
There is no set asking price right now, but the realty company that listed the property says it is accepting offers through June 30.
“There's a lot of potential with the building, with the neighborhood,” said Kulfan. “I know it's going to be expensive for whoever gets involved, but I think there would be a very positive return for the neighborhood.”
News 12 reached out to the company that manages the property and is waiting to hear back.
