The holiday gift no Long Islander wants but is getting in big numbers: The flu.
Nearly 10,000 cases were reported in Nassau and Suffolk counties for the week ending on Dec. 13, nearly double from the week before.
There are more than 113,000 reported cases across New York, according to the state health department.
Colleen Reilly, of East Meadow, just recovered from the illness.
"It was brutal. I highly recommend Tamiflu; it worked...amazing. So, I got right on it quickly and my fever went away, but it was terrible," she said.
While cases are being reported in adults and kids, Dr. Sharon Nachman, of Stony Brook Children's Hospital, says nearly 20 children with the flu have been admitted to the hospital in the last few days.
Nachman adds that most of those were unvaccinated.
According to the state health department, there has been 1 flu-associated pediatric death this season.
"I do think that we're not yet in the worst of it. I think the next few days to week or so will be even worse, especially with the Christmas season, children being out of school," Nachman said.
Doctors say if you're diagnosed with the flu, it's best to take medicine for it within the first 72 hours of feeling sick. CVS, Walgreens, and other local pharmacies on Long Island say that they're stocked up on medicine to treat the flu.
"If you have the flu and it's early on, it can be shortened significantly by taking something like Tamiflu," said Howard Jacobson, owner of Rockville Centre Pharmacy.
"It's in high demand, so you might need to call a few places to find it," Nachman said.
Pharmacies still have plenty of flu shots, which doctors say makes symptoms less severe and prevent hospitalization.
