Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo is celebrating the birth a Chinese goral kid, the first one to be born at the zoo.

Zoo officials say the animal was born during Tuesday's storm to parents Madeline and King. Mother and baby are doing well. The baby's name has not been released.

Gorals are a species of mountain goats that are considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Habitat loss and hunting continue to threaten populations.

Officials say the birth is important to the zoo and for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan because there are only 26 Chinese gorals living at eight AZA-accredited institutions.

Officials also say there were no Chinese gorals born in 2025. The baby is the fourth goral to be born in AZA-accredited zoo this year.
