A fire broke out at a house on Grove Street in Irvington this morning. The call came in just after 8:40 a.m., and firefighters responded within minutes.
When they arrived, firefighters saw smoke coming from the third floor. They were assisted by the Newark and South Essex fire departments.
"We started an aggressive offensive attack, we had to transition to defensive because there was so much fire, and there's a lot of rubbish in there, so we had to combat, dampen the fire down then transition back to offensive," said Chief Antonio Gary, of the Irvington Fire Department.
One neighboring home was evacuated as a precaution, but firefighters do not expect any significant damage.
