An electrical fire broke out outside the Hempstead District Courthouse.
The Nassau County Fire Marshal's Office says that it was an electrical vault fire at the exterior of the building. The fire did not spread into the courthouse, but power was shut off affecting traffic signals and some businesses throughout the village of Hempstead.
PSEG says it had to deenergize around 1,500 customers and that its crews were assessing the damage. If no damage is found, power may be restored Tuesday evening.
Two people had to be removed from one elevator, according to the fire marshals.
Around 150 firefighters were on scene, including the Nassau County Fire Marshals Hazmat, inspections and investigations divisions and the Nassau County deputy county fire coordinator.
No injuries were reported, according to the fire marshals.
