Students at Colonia Middle School in Woodbridge will learn from home Thursday after an early‑morning fire this week.
School officials said the fire started in the art room but did not spread.
The district said students will also be remote Friday. It is unclear if the building will reopen Monday.
Woodbridge Chief Law Enforcement Officer Brian Murphy said the fire broke out around 1:45 a.m. in the art room. When crews arrived, they found fire and heavy smoke throughout the building. Murphy said the fire "was quickly brought under control." Firefighters ventilated the building to eliminate the smoke. Superintendent of Schools Joseph Massimino said the fire was contained to one classroom "due to the quick response by our fire department."
The cause of the fire has not yet been released.
