A large fire in Bound Brook displaced more than 20 people Friday afternoon.
The fire began around 10:30 a.m. inside a building on Vosseller Avenue and spread to another. One of those buildings is a multifamily apartment, while the other has a business on the first floor and apartments on top.
All of the residents were able to get out of the building safely, according to officials. The American Red Cross says it is helping 20-25 people from 11 families who were displaced.
“The fire got really bad, and I could see it from the top of the building,” says witness Nicole Avedon.
The fire badly damaged the buildings. One had a partial roof collapse.
Officials are urging the public to avoid the area for the time being while cleanup is underway.
Fire officials say that no residents were hurt. News 12 did see one firefighter on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance. Officials say he is being treated for minor injuries.
"Due to the extensive damage to the buildings Vosseller Avenue will be closed through the weekend from Talmage Avenue to West Second Street while the structures are demolished," officials wrote in a statement.
The cause of the fire was not immediately released.
