Three boats erupted into flames at a Keyport marina Monday afternoon, sending plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.
News 12 was told that the fire broke out sometime around 2:30 p.m. at the Brown’s Point Marina on the Matawan Creek.
There are more questions than there are answers, with no official word on a cause from first responders.
News 12 did speak with business owners in the area. Steve Haasz of "Up Front Bait and Tackle" said the air was filled with smoke.
"I was across the street in the deli. I walked outside there was smoke all over the place,” Haasz said. “Fire department went flying down the road, helicopters flying all over the place. And I found out one boat exploded and three boats were on fire."
"A lot of smoke and a lot of people around here. Traffic was jammed. The fire truck from Middletown and different townships also came, so I think it was big,” said Maya Shukla, of Dockside Deli.
Several roadways in the area were closed for a time.
It was not clear if any injuries were reported.
