A firefighter was hospitalized due to a slip and fall while responding to a three-alarm fire overnight in Paterson, officials said.
The fire erupted around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday along East Railway Avenue, an industrial and commercial strip, gutting a row of Middle Eastern businesses.
Businesses that were damaged include Al Mazaq, the city's first Iraqi restaurant and bakery, Star Halal Meat, and Alhamadanya Sweets.
One person was treated at the scene for an unspecified injury. The firefighter is recovering this morning.
"This is Ramadan, so they were probably celebrating the holiday and gearing up for it," Mayor Andre Sayegh said.
The cause remains under investigation.
