One person is dead and several others were injured – including eight police officers – in a fire at a Bayonne apartment building.
Officials say the fire started around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Post Road Gardens Center, an 11-story senior apartment complex on Avenue A. Officials say the fire started on the third floor.
Firefighters removed one woman from the building. She was taken to the hospital and later died. She was identified as 82-year-old Irene Clark.
Three residents and eight police officers were treated for smoke inhalation. All have been released from the hospital, according to the authorities.
Fire officials say it took nearly an hour to bring the fire under control.
Bayonne Fire Chief Keith Weaver says that the rest of the residents were safely evacuated from the building. Most of the residents were able to return to their apartments a few hours later.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire. They say that the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
