Loved ones, fellow officers and first responders gathered Thursday to say a final goodbye to Town of Newburgh Detective Christopher Thompson, who died after a battle with cancer at just 35 years old.

Funeral services were held at the Cronomer Valley Fire House in Newburgh, where a large law enforcement presence turned out to honor Thompson and his years of service.

Thompson died Aug. 8.

He joined the Town of Newburgh Police Department in April 2017 after previously serving with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and Town of Wallkill Police Department.

During his career in Newburgh, Thompson served in the Patrol Division and as a K-9 handler. He was also a firearms instructor, general topics instructor and team leader on the department’s Tactical Unit. Most recently, he served as a detective in the Detective Bureau.

Following the funeral service, a procession accompanied Thompson to Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh, where a K-9 lineup was held in recognition of his service as a handler before he was laid to rest.

The Town of Newburgh Police Department said Thompson’s dedication to his profession, fellow officers and the community would not be forgotten.

“His loss is deeply felt throughout our Department and the entire law enforcement community,” the department said.
