Former correctional officer Leon Wilson was sentenced to 200 months for depriving an individual of his constitutional rights and using a firearm during a crime of violence.
Wilson was convicted back in October 2025 on both counts of the indictment.
Back on September 4, 2023, it was reported that Wilson while on duty chased a civilian car out of the Metropolitan Detention Center.
He chased the civilian car to the edge of the Brooklyn Bridge. It was reported that during the chase Wilson exceeded speeding limits, passed other cars and ran red lights.
Two minutes into the chase, Wilson discharged several rounds at the car. One of the bullets struck a backseat passenger in the chest and lungs.
The on-duty shooting was never reported to NYPD, the Metropolitan Detention Center or Bureau of Prisons personnel.
“Leon Wilson used the authority entrusted to him as a federal correctional officer not to protect the public, but to engage in a dangerous and unjustified pursuit that culminated in gunfire on the streets of Brooklyn,” stated United States Attorney Nocella.
The case will continue being handled by the Office’s Public Integrity and Human Trafficking and Civil Rights Sections.
