The FDNY says they’re investigating the possibility that
the fire that tore down South Bushwick Reformed Church was set intentionally.
“It adds another layer of grief to this situation. Obviously, you know, and hearing that news, we are even more disturbed, devastated that someone would intentionally target us. And we don't know why,” said Pastor James Steward.
The three-alarm fire happened on June 19.
While the
church fights to save what’s left of the building, demolition crews could be seen at the site and there was a sign posted saying the demolition is scheduled for completion in August.
“We’re exploring all of our options. Obviously, it’s in the midst of a full demolition, so what does that mean in terms of being able to develop possibly after that or move to a different location to serve,” said Steward.
Residents like Alex Villacres say the church is part of the neighborhood.
“Having a stalwart and historic piece of this area is, it's nice. We have bodegas and you have like churches like that. That's the stalwarts of the community. So it’s sweet to have something like that and horrible when it, when it goes,” said Villacres.
In the meantime, Steward says they’ll continue to have remote services.
“Church is always the people. And, you know, we are calling on the people to rally around us as you've been doing and continue to support. With your prayers, with your presence, with finances, to help us to be able to rebuild and to continue to serve the community as we've been doing,” said Steward.
The FDNY says they're continuing to investigate.
