Mike's Donut Shop owner, Mike Neamonitis, died this week at 83 years old.
Neamonitis was well known across Brooklyn, especially in his home neighborhood of Bay Ridge.
His family says is story is the "American Dream."
He and his wife came to the United States in 1966 from Greece.
Neamonitis's son, Gus Neamonitis, tells News 12 that his father came to Brooklyn with "nothing but a backpack and clothes on his pack."
In 1976, Neamonitis took a leap and opened up donut shop on Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge.
His daughter, Dina Rosvoglou, says their donut recipes has not changed since they opened.
She says when longtime customers come in, they say it feels just like it did almost 50 years ago.
Neamonitis's grandson, Mike Rosvoglou, has fond memories of working in the shop as a kid.
He says his grandfather knew he could handle closing up shop, but he would come by just "to watch" and make sure everything was OK - always with a cup of coffee in hand.
The Bay Ridge community has come out in numbers to show their support for the beloved donut shop's family.
News 12 saw customers coming in to drop off flowers and sending their condolences.
The family tells News 12 the shop is "not going anywhere" and they look forward to serving their neighborhood for many years to come.
