A family has been reunited with a cat that was lost for a decade, all thanks to a microchip.

Officials with the Montclair Animal Shelter say that the family adopted two kittens from a shelter in 2015. They say that not long after the kittens were adopted, one of them slipped out through a window and disappeared.

The family searched everywhere, contacted shelters and even put up posters – but never found their pet.

The Montclair Animal Shelter says that fast forward 10 years, a good Samaritan brought in a stray cat. The first thing the shelter did was scan for a microchip. They say that the chip showed that it was registered to the family, who still had the same phone number.

The now-10-year-old cat was reunited with the family on Nov. 14.

“Microchips matter. Microchips work. And sometimes, they bring a lost family member home,” the shelter wrote in a Facebook post.

The Montclair Animal Shelter will microchip pets for $20. Pet owners can call 973-744-1400 ext. 5313 to make an appointment.
