The family of 44-year-old Keon Gill, who was shot and killed in Kingsbridge early Sunday morning, is remembering his life.
The Gill family tells News 12 he was celebrating his 44th birthday at a local bar at West 242 Street and Broadway on Saturday night.
He was accompanied by his brother, Luis, and a few friends.
News 12 was told the party ended just before 3 a.m. on Sunday and they left.
Police said multiple shots were fired, and Keon Gill was fatally shot in the chest. His brother was shot in the leg.
Keon Gill is survived by his four children.
"His world was his kids. They were his life," said Mahogany, the mother of his children.
The family said his children are devastated. They said his love of life, dedication to his family and innate kindness will live on in them.
News 12 spoke exclusively with Michele Weissman, Gill's girlfriend. She said the incident was a case of wrong place, wrong time.
"At this point, I just know whatever it was had nothing to do with him. I know that it was wrong place, wrong time, and he definitely didn't deserve this," said Weissman.
According to authorities, no arrests have been made. Police said they do not know of a motive yet.
News 12 spoke with multiple family members. They all described Gill as a dedicated, active father with a genuine soul.
"I was the world to know they took a good man," said Mahogany.
Gill's family said they don't want the tragedy to overshadow Keon's legacy.
"I want people to remember him for the kind of kind-hearted, compassionate... most generous person you will ever meet. He would give the shirt off his back for you," said Wiessman.
