An official portrait of late Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver was unveiled Thursday, with the help of her family.
The state honored her legacy by giving the portrait a permanent home at the State House.
The Newark native became the first woman of color in the state of New Jersey to be given the role of lieutenant governor after building a career in public service by advocating for social justice, woman equality and education.
Oliver’s niece, Renee, is the current president of a nonprofit named after the former lieutenant governor that committed to helping young woman of color who have an interest in government, public policy, and community organizing.
