A family of five was forced from their home after a New Year's Day fire in Paramus.
The fire broke out at 33 Spring Valley Avenue just before 2 a.m. Thursday. Upon arrival, Paramus police officers observed heavy fire conditions at the rear of a two-and-a-half-story residence and immediately assisted residents who were self-evacuating.
The investigation remains active; however, the fire is believed to have been caused by fireworks ignited to celebrate the New Year that were not fully extinguished.
It was the first call of the year for Paramus firefighters.
The Red Cross is now assisting the family.
