A driver died Monday morning after crashing into a tree on Route 9A in Mount Pleasant.
Mt. Pleasant police say they received a 911 call at 7:36 a.m. from a motorist who reported part of a fallen tree blocking the left lane on Route 9A southbound in the Hawthorne section. The caller said she saw another vehicle swerve to avoid the debris, lose control and crash into a separate tree along the right shoulder.
Patrol officers arrived at 7:41 a.m. and found the tree debris in the roadway and the crashed vehicle farther down the road. Police say the male driver was unresponsive.
Officers worked to free the driver, removing him from the vehicle at 8:05 a.m. and performing CPR. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
The identity of the driver is being withheld pending notification of family. The crash happened about 100 yards past the entrance ramp from Route 117 to Route 9A southbound.
The roadway was closed for accident investigation but has since reopened
