The Town of Fairfield was recognized for its high voter turnout during the 2024 election Friday.
Secretary of the State Stephanie Thomas awarded officials with the Democracy Cup during a presentation at the Fairfield Regional Fire School.
Fairfield achieved the highest voter participation in the large town category. There are a total of four categories: small town, mid-sized town, large town and city.
The town's turnout was 84.5%, while the state average was 75%, according to Thomas.
Thomas says there are several reasons for high voter turnout, such as competitive races and an increase in television and print ads.
During the presentation, Thomas acknowledged it takes a team effort of people to encourage others to vote and have their voices heard.
"All the poll workers, it's definitely town leaders, state leaders who give voters something to vote for. And it's also voters who take the time out of their busy schedules to feel like they have some agency in how their town will be managed," she said.
The cup was created in 2000 and is awarded to municipalities every two years.
