TRAVEL ALERT: Newark Liberty International Airport is experiencing delays on arriving flights due to staffing issues., according to the FAA. Be sure to check with your airline on your fight's status.
Just in time for the busy holiday season, the Federal Aviation Administration’s staffing shortages are causing problems for United Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport.
United says Newark needs more air traffic controllers. The airline says the most important thing that could be done to better the flying experience is to fully staff the FAA.
The airline has been affected by the FAA’s slowdown in air traffic into their Newark hub for 12 days in November. This comes after the FAA announced staffing shortages are forcing a reduction in air traffic so that the FAA can manage the air safely.
United says in November over 343,000 United travelers were disrupted by delays, cancellations, long taxi times and longer flight times. That’s more than 28,000 customers disrupted each day of the staffing shortages.
Slowdowns on Saturday led to over 45,000 customers experiencing gate delays, taxiing or air delays.
United says on normal days, flights arrive an average of five minutes early, with slowdowns that fell to an average of 25 minutes late.
United shared they are working closely with the FAA to fine-tune the traffic management program.
The FAA says at Newark, arriving flights may be delayed over an hour and a half on average for Tuesday night.
Over 200 flights have been delayed as of Tuesday evening.
