A collapsed sidewalk in Mott Haven is forcing pedestrians to walk into a busy street, raising serious safety concerns.
Residents say the sidewalk, located near St. Mary’s Street and Concord Avenue, has been damaged for over a month, worsening with recent snow.
“Elderly people can’t walk up and down. They have to come out in the street, possibly slip and fall,” said resident Rodney Fulmore.
Many say they’ve had to navigate snowy, icy roads to avoid the hazardous sidewalk. “I slipped two days ago just trying to get by,” said Elvin Espinosa, another resident.
The Department of Transportation told News 12 the MTA property underneath the sidewalk is causing the damaged condition. It notified the MTA to make the repair, and said it will secure the sidewalk with barricades in the meantime.
News 12 also reached out to the MTA for further information, but has not heard back.
