The Bronx is getting its first full-service animal shelter - and News 12 got an exclusive first look of the progress inside.
Construction is well underway at the site on Bartow avenue in Co-op City. Bronx Animal Care Center offer care for animals in need.
"We’ll have an active rehabilitation veterinary clinic in here, active emergency services," said Aleksandr Kostyrkin, the deputy director at the NYC Department of Design and Construction. "So this will be a great addition to the community."
The facility is set to hold more than 250 animals, including 70 dogs, 140 cats, 30 rabbits and up to 20 animals of other species.
The center will also give Bronx residents a chance to meet and adopt a new companion.
“There’s also surrender prevention services, so people that need pet food, or they need some minimal thing to be able to keep their animal, they’ll be able to come here and get that," Mario Merlino, assistant commissioner for veterinary public health at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said.
Adoption services will also be available.
The Bronx Animal Care Center is expected to open in mid-2026.
