A former Riverhead High School teacher was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison after admitting to soliciting nude images from underage girls and sending explicit images of himself to minors.
Ryan McCaffery, 38, pleaded guilty in September to two counts of disseminating indecent material to minors and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
Prosecutors say the New York State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on Nov. 4, 2024, that child sexual abuse material had been shared through the messaging app Kik.
State police executed a search warrant at McCaffery's Ridge home in Jan. 2025 and seized several electronic devices.
A digital forensic analysis found that between Dec. 2024 and Jan. 2025, McCaffery posed as a teenage boy on Snapchat using the username "c_chambers77" to communicate with multiple underage girls.
Investigators say he added hundreds of accounts in an effort to contact underage girls, sent explicit images of himself and requested nude photos in return.
Prosecutors also say he attempted to access and purchase additional child sexual abuse material and shared at least one such video with another Kik user.
McCaffery worked as a social studies teacher and junior varsity boys’ soccer coach at Riverhead High School. He resigned on Feb. 5, 2025, and was arrested on May 12, 2025.
In addition to his three-year prison sentence, McCaffery was ordered to serve five years of post-release supervision.
Prosecutors say he previously was convicted and sentenced for similar offenses in Bergen County, New Jersey.
