Republicans are calling for one of their own to resign from elected office after calling Democrats “faithless, God hating evil, vile people” on social media.
The posts came after last week’s murder of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.
Despite the condemnation from her own party, Melissa Longo said she will not step down from Fairfield’s legislative body. Instead, she accused GOP leaders of “cowardice” and hypocrisy.
CONTROVERSIAL POSTS
Kirk’s killing has sparked bipartisan calls for unity – but also anger. Fairfield Republicans believe that Longo took her anger too far.
“Free speech is one thing. Hate speech is something else and is not acceptable,” said Republican Town Committee Chair Laura Devlin, a former candidate for lieutenant governor. “Rep. Longo’s comments were really unfortunate, and they do not represent the values that the Fairfield Republican Town Committee stand for.”
Longo posted on Facebook: “F*** the left. Conservatives are only more emboldened than we are afraid of being silenced … F*** off if you feel any differently, we are done playing with you.”
In a followup post, she called Democrats “faithless, God hating evil, vile people.”
The top Republican on Fairfield’s Representative Town Meeting called for Longo to step down and drop her re-election bid.
“Right now, we need to all take a step back and think about how we communicate with one another – how we communicate publicly,” said Jeff Steele, the RTM’s Minority Leader.
LONGO: GOP SHOWING “COWARDICE”
Longo did not respond to request for comment from News 12 Connecticut, but told Heart Connecticut Media that she will not step down.
“This is cowardice,” she said in a statement. “Trying to silence me and those who speak the truth, no matter how it’s delivered is not the answer. Charlie Kirk was assassinated for the exercising his First Amendment right to free speech.”
Longo also said she is being held to a double standard.
“Not once had the [Democratic Town Committee] called for the resignation of their majority leader Elizabeth Zezima for her comments, doxxing people and harming local businesses with her daily commentary on social media outlets,” Longo said. “The DTC never asked for Kevin Stark’s resignation from the board of finance when he posted a picture with former RTC chair Sarah Matthews’ head being used as a target for a whackamole game.”
REPUBLICAN RIFT?
Longo’s comments are placing Republicans in a difficult position leading to two crucial elections.
The GOP is attempting to retake control of Fairfield town government in a special election for first selectman. State Sen. Tony Hwang, who is running for the job, stopped short of calling for Longo to resign on Monday.
“Let me be clear: I do not condone words of violence, incitement of violence,” he told reporters.
Longo is also surfacing in next year’s race for governor. She appears briefly in a campaign ad for Republican Ryan Fazio.
Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont, who is likely to seek a third term next year, denounced Longo’s online comments.
“She wouldn’t be in my ad; I can tell you that,” Lamont said. “After a tragedy like what happened last week, we try to bring people together. That’s what it meant when the Young Republicans and the Young Democrats shook hands and said we both oppose political violence.”
Fazio’s campaign declined to say if Longo would remain in the ad.
“Of course I oppose what Melissa said. I think everyone should be civil in their discourse. She should apologize,” Fazio said in a statement. “I also hope the media will hold accountable powerful Democrats making equally extreme statements, including a sitting Connecticut congressman comparing law enforcement agents to fascist secret police. We can all do better at raising the level of civility.”
DEMOCRATS' COMMENTS
Fazio was referring to longtime Rep. John Larson, who recently compared the Trump administration's immigration crackdown to Nazi Germany.
“This is not Germany. That’s the SS and the Gestapo,” he told a crowd in Newington last month. “This is the United States of America.”
But Larson, who is facing a primary challenge from three fellow Democrats, also tweeted condolences to Kirk’s family after his death.
“We must never accept political violence in the United States of America,” Larson wrote. “We resolve our political differences at the ballot box.”
The chair of the Farmington Board of Education was also criticized for re-posting the message, "They reap what they sow," after Kirk's killing.
“As the official responsible for the education of Farmington’s children, you’d expect Mr. Beckert to show restraint and basic decency,” said Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto. “Instead, he celebrated the brutal murder of a young husband and father of two, whose only ‘crime’ was having an opinion. That is grotesque."
