A Bronx mother who has been charged with the murder of her newborn twins was arraigned from her hospital bed.
Stephanie Castillo, 36, was charged with six counts of murder and manslaughter for the November 9, 2020, slaying of her newborn twin babies.
The identical twin boys were born at 37 weeks and were killed within 24 hours after being born, according to court documents. Medical examiners report that both babies had multiple blunt impacts to their head and torso.
Detectives arrested Castillo on July 25 after she discarded a can in a public garbage can.
The can had multiple positive DNA matches to several items that were found at the scene.
On Nov. 9, 2020, the superintendent of 1460 College Ave. made the discovery of the babies in the back alley of the building. The first baby was found wrapped in a tissue pad in the alleyway. The second baby was found inside a black garbage bag. Both the tissue pad and garbage bag, as well as hair found on the second baby, matched Castillo's DNA, according to court documents.
Castillo lived on the fourth floor of the College Avenue building at the time of their deaths. Detectives say she has been transient over the last four and a half years and most recently was living at a women's shelter on Jerome Avenue.
She will remain in custody until her next court appearance that's scheduled for September.
