Could a move to the Lone Star state be in the Connecticut Sun's future?
According to a recent ESPN report, Houston Rockets ownership is in serious talks to buy the franchise and move it to Texas.
The news comes on the heels of a monthslong push by state leaders to keep the Sun in Connecticut.
When a then-Boston Celtics minority owner struck up a $325 million deal with the Mohegans this past July to move the franchise to Beantown, a Connecticut group matched the bid, hoping to keep the Sun in Connecticut and move the team right down the road to Hartford.
The WNBA ultimately blocked the Boston deal in part because cities that had already gone through the expansion process had priority.
Then, later this year, Gov. Ned Lamont worked up a plan where the state would purchase part of the Sun, but the proposal wasn't a slam dunk for the WNBA either.
The Mohegan Tribe said it wouldn't comment on any specific deals currently on the table that aren't finalized, but it did reiterate its commitment to exploring different avenues of investment opportunities for the Sun.
All of this is happening while the WNBA and its players’ union try to negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement.
For now, the Sun still plans to play the 2026 season in Connecticut. But at the end of the day, the WNBA has the final say on who the franchise is sold to.
