A hospital in Jersey City will close its doors for good on Saturday. The Emergency Department at Heights University Hospital is shutting down, the last remaining part of the facility after the rest closed in November.
Management with Hudson Regional Health said the decision follows a projected $30 million loss for the Emergency Department. Leaders also cited cuts in federal and state funding for a hospital where 65% of patients rely on charity care. Patient numbers have also dropped.
Residents in this Jersey City community are pushing back, saying the site is vital for medical treatment. Mayor James Solomon called the closure unacceptable and noted that just a year earlier the CEO had described a bright future for the Heights. He said conversations are underway with Governor Sherrill, the state Department of Health, the local legislative delegation and Hudson Regional Health about options to preserve access to care.
The president of HPAE, the union representing hospital workers, said business ventures appear to come first even if patients’ lives may be at risk. The union is urging Governor Sherrill to step in immediately to stop the closure.
Officials are waiting to see if Governor Sherrill will get involved.
