The New York City Economic Development Corporation, or NYCEDC, unveiled the city's first-ever freight-focused electric vehicle charging facility for the South Bronx. It will specifically be located in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center.
City partners gathered in Hunts Point, where the project will break ground, to make the announcement.
They said developer MN8 Energy will be the clean energy provider.
The proposal will bring a charging depot, welcome center and workforce development hub to the South Bronx.
Organizers say this is the next chapter in the city's commitment to the "Hunts Point Forward Plan" toward a cleaner and greener community.
The charging depot will be stacked with 32 fast chargers and 10 Level 2 chargers.
The city said this plan is aimed at decreasing the volume of gas vehicles on the roads and bringing more electric vehicles to Hunts Point.
"What this will create, when this is fully built out, is the facility where they can come and easily charge when they're using the market here," said Andrew Kimballl, president and CEO of NYCEDC.
Kimball said this hub will offer a gateway for clean energy, bring more jobs to the South Bronx, and reconnect the community.
One major part of the announcement is a brand new 12,500 square feet multi-purpose welcome center dubbed "The Bolt."
"It's going to have a convenience store, one or two quick service restaurants, a meditation room, gardens... the kind of place where people can relax and recharge," said Alan Dowdell, MN8 Energy vice president and Head of Distribution Energy.
Organizers said the welcome center will also include classrooms, employment office, reception, employee restroom and shared employment office.
Mack Trucks, a subsidiary of Volvo, displayed the company's first-ever electric garbage truck. It presented the vehicle to Royal Waste, a NYC based waste company that prides itself on sustainable waste reduction and recycling programs.
