An East Tremont teenager is facing felony gun charges in connection with the deadly Labor Day shooting on Allerton Avenue. He says he had nothing to do with the crime.
The 18-year-old, who asked not to be identified, says the only thing he’s guilty of is being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I never had a gun. I’ll never have a gun. I like helping people. I don’t really like hurting people,” he said.
Police say he was driving a Dodge Caravan when suspects fleeing the shooting crashed into him. He says the crash is still vivid in his memory.
“I saw the glass break on my left side, and then I saw something fly right by my face," the teen said.
Investigators say they later found a gun magazine in his car and a handgun underneath it. He was taken to the hospital and then arrested.
The teen's father insists that his son is innocent.
“I know that he’s innocent. I know my son firsthand, and he has no connections with those guys,” the father said. “They’re talking about 10 to 15 years for a kid who just turned 18, just graduated high school three months ago, and has never had a record. There’s no reason for him to go from that to that. It’s totally unfair.”
The teen says he was terrified when he was told he was under arrest.
“That was my first time ever being told that, so it had me scared. I’ve never been through jail. It just had me shook, had me in disbelief.”
He spent two nights in a holding cell at the 49th Precinct before being released. He pleaded not guilty. Records show he has never been arrested before.
The teen recently graduated from Bronx Design and Construction Academy and planned to become a plumber. He says the crash still haunts him.
“Every time I sleep, I see the car crash. I see the guy fly. It just replays a lot in my head.”
He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Sept. 8.
