Dr. Christopher Irving, superintendent of East Orange Schools, announced that all schools will operate on a half-day schedule today, Oct. 17, due to unforeseen circumstances.
The note on its website apologized for the late notice and asked parents for their understanding.
The reason for the half-day schedule wasn't given, but News 12 sources say it is related to the recently announced layoffs. Teachers called out this morning.
Over 70 East Orange School District employees will be without a job effective Dec. 15.
Superintendent Irving previously stated that the district lacks funds to pay employees, having received only $200,000 in state aid. He cited salaries, out-of-district tuition, food service and transportation as the district's biggest budget challenges.
