Consumer watchdogs suggest drivers be on the lookout potential scams when gassing up, as the the average price for gasoline in New Jersey is now $4.26 per gallon for regular.
Last week, News 12 New Jersey reported on the owner of three gas stations in Toms River who was fined $17,000 by Ocean County's Office of Weights and Measures for charging more than the price advertised at the pump.
Consumer affairs officials suggest drivers always get a receipt when paying for fuel to check if the price paid matches the price advertised on the signage that may have lured you to stop at a particular gas station.
Also, examine the pump for an inspection sticker from the Office of Weights and Measures.
Some drivers say they've never even heard of such a decal.
Others, including a driver from Fairfield, who preferred that their name not be not used, says they watch attendants closely.
"Absolutely...you have to. I want to make sure the prices match up. Like sometimes they can claim, 'Oh I thought you said premium and then you paid another $10 or $15,” they said.
Consumer affairs officials suggest that if someone sees a discrepancy in the price to immediately tell the attendant or take a photo. They can also contact the Office of Weights and Measures.
