A shocking crash in Greenpoint has left the neighborhood rattled and searching for answers.
Surveillance video shows a car speeding down the street, slamming into a school bus, backing up and striking it again.
Witnesses say it didn’t stop there - the driver rammed the bus multiple times before speeding off.
“I heard a crash, then screeching tires,” said witness Danielle Barkoski. “The car’s hood was torn apart, but it just kept ramming the bus and then took off.”
The aftermath is still visible at Nassau and Morgan Avenues, where mangled car parts and vehicles with deep gashes line the street. Police say a driver in a black Mercedes caused the chaos just before 6 p.m. Monday.
For many who live nearby, the scene was unsettling, but not unexpected.
“It’s almost normal,” said one witness, Walter. “This block is like a speedway.”
City data backs up those concerns, finding 123 crashes have occurred at the intersection this year alone, five of them deadly. Neighbors say reckless driving continues despite posted speed limits.
“They’ve done a lot of hit-and-runs around here,” said resident Moses Wills. “But to see something like this; it’s disturbing.”
Police say there were no children on the bus at the time. The driver, however, suffered injuries to both legs and was taken to Woodhull Medical Center.
“My God, it’s a school bus,” said Matt Berlin, CEO of NYCS Bus. “We’re very concerned about road safety. Seeing something like this just reinforces how careful we need to be.”
Police sources tell News 12 that they are still searching for the driver involved.
