Drew University is launching a new private school for students in grades 1-8 on its Madison campus this fall, using an education model that incorporates artificial intelligence and personalized learning.

The Drew School is being created in partnership with 2HR Learning, the AI-driven curriculum platform used by Alpha School. Drew University said it will be the first higher-education partner for the platform and the first university campus to host a school using the model.

Under the model, students will progress at their own pace using adaptive learning technology with support from learning coaches. The school will also emphasize skills including public speaking, financial literacy, AI fluency, time management and leadership. Students will work on projects intended to address real-world problems.

Students will have access to Drew University facilities and faculty members, some of whom will serve as mentors and learning coaches.

“We recognize the importance of rethinking every stage of learning from age 6-60 and beyond,” Drew University President Hilary Link said.

Brian Holtz, a co-founder of Alpha School, will lead The Drew School. He said the program is intended to give students more freedom to pursue their individual interests rather than conform to a traditional school model.
