A new busway could be coming to East Tremont, but not everyone is along for the ride.
On Nov. 4, the Department of Transportation presented a proposal to Community Board 5 to create a busway on East Tremont Avenue from Third Avenue to Southern Boulevard along the Bx36 route. Only trucks and buses are allowed to drive in busways but don’t eliminate parking spaces. DOT says this would speed up commutes for 34,000 daily bus riders on the Bx36 where buses can move less than 5 mph in many areas during peak periods.
The agency says it surveyed 162 merchants on Tremont Avenue and 290 bus riders, and found that up to 50% of drivers on Tremont Avenue don’t end their trips near the busway and could use an alternate route. DOT also reported that most shoppers and pedestrians report that they travel to Tremont Avenue by bus or walking.
However, Community Board 6 told News 12 that it conducted a survey of its own and found that more than 4 in 5 respondents opposed a busway on Tremont as proposed by DOT, and 1 in 4 respondents submitted a comment requesting NYPD traffic enforcement on Tremont Avenue to address double parking instead of a busway.
The DOT’s plan does include NYPD enforcement through ACE cameras in effect, which have been in effect on Tremont Avenue on the Bx36 route since June 2024.
The busway could come to the area as soon as spring 2025, but before that the Transportation Department will present its proposal to Community Board 6.
The agency told News 12 over email that it will incorporate community feedback as the proposal is finalized.
