One hops, and the other gallops, yet somehow, a young kangaroo and a bison calf are proving that friendship knows no species.

Gertie, a 2-month-old bison calf, and Penny, a 1-year-old kangaroo, may seem like an unlikely pair of pals, but workers at Six Flags Wild Safari in Jackson say their bond is unmistakable.

“The pair are currently spending time near the Wild Safari’s veterinary clinic, where their daily routine has developed into something the animal care team did not expect,” Six Flags said.

Most days, workers arrive to find the two engaging in their daily routine, with Penny grooming her much larger friend.

“It’s unusual to see two very different species form this kind of connection, but they genuinely enjoy being together,” said Dr. William Rives, director of safari at Six Flags Great Adventure. “Penny grooming Gertie has become an almost daily occurrence, and it’s been wonderful for our team to watch that bond develop.”

According to Six Flags, the best friends are preparing for a new chapter that could lead to their eventual separation. Penny was hand-raised at Six Flags and will soon join the rest of the kangaroo population at the safari. Although it will be a big transition for both animals, the besties are making the most of their time together.
